Baby flung from car in crash

11/10/2008 11:00:01 PM

A BABY aged five months sitting on the lap of a teenager was flung from a car when it overturned on a country road, seriously injuring six.

The 19-year-old learner driver was granted bail yesterday to face Deniliquin Local Court on November 18.

The woman is believed to have lost control of a Ford Falcon sedan on an unsealed section of road near Conargo, in southern NSW, about 12.30pm on Friday.

"The Ford appears to have slid into a drain and rolled several times," police said.

All occupants of the car - the driver and five children aged between five months and 16 years - were injured.

"As a result of the crash two children, aged five months and 14 years, were ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious head and hip injuries respectively," police said.

"Police believe the infant was unrestrained and sitting on the lap of a teenager in the front passenger seat at the time of the crash."

The baby was airlifted to hospital in Victoria by helicopter and remained in a serious but stable condition late yesterday. The other passengers and driver were taken to Deniliquin hospital by ambulance.

The driver, a 16-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy suffered minor injuries, while a 14-year-old boy suffered a suspected dislocated hip and a nine-year-old boy broke his ankle.

The driver has been charged with driving offences including negligent driving, being an unaccompanied learner and having unrestrained passengers.
