CONSISTENCY paid dividends for the winning team in the grand final of the Eastern Goldfields Squash Racquet Association's 2008 Autumn mixed pennants competition. Naretha took out the A grade title by defeating Kurnalpi on the weekend.
Naretha’s Krush Albert started well for his team with a straight sets win over Kurnalpi opponent Peter De Groot. Albert had to work hard to overcome a determined De Groot before winning 9-5, 9-1, 9-4.
Albert’s teammate Eric Plet then defeated Kurnalpi’s Travis Hosking in four sets 9-3, 6-9, 9-0, 9-2.
Naretha’s Tim Campbell sealed the result with a strong straight sets win over his in-form Kurnalpi opponent John Summeville.
With the team result decided Kurnalpi’s Leon Crooke’s demolition of Brett Boase in straight sets could do nothing to alter the result. Crooke’s ability to manoeuvre and his quick reactions were decisive in his 9-2, 9-1, 9-1 win.
In the B grade Zanthus won the day and the title with a hard fought victory over a strong Bulong outfit.
Zanthus’ Jared Laing defeated his Bulong opponent Dianne Te Hau in straight sets 9-4, 9-0, 9-2.
Bulong replied with Kerry Bayliss taking on Laing again and beating him in four sets 3-9, 9-1, 9-2, 9-0.
Zanthus’ Michael Gassmier again fought back for his team with a solid win over Bayliss 9-4, 6-9, 9-4, 9-0.
Bulong’s Daniel Carlon’s straight sets win over Zanthus’ Sharon Mcfarlane was not enough and Zanthus took the tile. Carlon won 9-4, 9-6, 9-3.
