Poker registrations open

1/08/2008 9:50:00 AM
CARD sharks will be delighted to know that registrations are now open for what will be the city's biggest-ever poker tournament.

As a part of the annual race round and the centenary celebrations of the Kalgoorlie Town Hall, the monster poker tournament will be held on the Friday night before the Kalgoorlie Cup.

Organisers expect some gamblers to travel from Perth and other parts of the state for the Texas Hold ‘em night, which is expected have a minimum first prize of $10,000.

In order to ensure locals are given first preference registration will only be available to local players for the first week.

Discover the Round chairman John Bowler MLA says there has been unprecedented interest in the poker night.

“Even before registration opened we’ve had more than one local employer contact us to enquire about paying the nomination of his workers to reward them for their dedication and hard work,” Mr Bowler said.

“Registration will cost $100 and it can be paid at my office at 99 Burt Street during office hours.

“We will limit the tournament to 300 players.”

Mr Bowler said he expected many visitors to the Round to want to play once they arrived and found out about the inaugural tournament but once the limit was reached nominations will close.

He said the organisers had been very lucky to have the support of tournament director Kevin Archer from the Metropole Hotel in Boulder.

“Kevin is very experienced in this area, although this will be the biggest he has ever conducted, “ said Mr Bowler.

“We have promoted a first prize of $10,000 and all players on the final table will receive prizemoney but if we sell out it will be even higher.”

A special set of chips has been purchased for the tournament.
