Little life savers in training

1/08/2008 9:51:00 AM
JUNIOR life saving lessons are growing in popularity at the Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre.

Club instructor Chontal Summersby is busily teaching survival skills such as back stroke, breast stroke and side stroke coaching, all of which are essential for the many ways to tow a person being rescued.

Other forms of training include resuscitation and first aid.

Fitness swimming and team building skills all help to work towards a safer and more efficient Life Saving Team.

Children are learning how to deal with real-life situations by participating in scenarios which imitate actual situations.

Basic swimming skills are the minimum requirements needed before joining the Junior Life Guards.

Instructors are all AusSwim qualified and hold a minimum Bronze Medal in Life Saving.

Each member will receive a log book to record their progress along the journey to reach the bronze medallion.

All aspects of fitness and rescue are considered throughout training, with these skills put to the test during the annual competition. Last year these competitions were held at Esperance and this year's event is expected to be held in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

If you or your child are interested in joining the Junior Life Saving Club please contact the Oasis Recreation Centre on 9022 2922.
