Carbine fires in squash final

CARBINE held off a strong challenge to take out the A grade grand final in the Eastern Goldfields Squash Racquets Association mixed pennant competition on Saturday.

After taking out the minor title, Carbine won the final played at the YMCA three rubbers to one.

Wayne Astill, Mark Corradetti and Andrew Bewsher defeated their Zanthus opponents Nathan Abel, Griff Campbell and Janelle Hanks respectively.

Zanthus’ only winner, Marc Scott. defeated Eric Plet in straight sets.

In the B grade final Widgiemooltha ‘young guns’ caused an upset, defeating the highly fancied Fimiston team.

Finishing third for the season, Widgiemooltha had to see off Carbine and then Kurnalpi during the week to make the final.

At two rubbers all, the result would be decided by points.

Widgeiemooltha’s Ashley Grove and Brad Dalton defeated Fimistons’s Di Te Hau and Adrian Lockett respectively.

Fimiston’s winners Matt Pettit and Tony Balnave defeated Chad Rowe and Mark Posa in straight sets respectively.

Widgiemooltha won by a nail-biting 10 points.

EGSRA grand final results:

A grade: Carbine defeated Zanthus; M Scott def E Plet 3-0, J Hanks lost to A Bewsher 3-0, G Campbell lost to M Corradettti 3-1, N Abel lost to W Astill 3-0.

B Grade: Widgiemooltha defeated Fimiston; B Dalton def A Lockett 3-0, M Posa lost to T Balnave 3-0, C Rowe lost to M Pettit 3-0, A Grove def D Te Hau 3-0.
