Western Australia has finished third after the regular rounds at the Australian Country Championships in Shepparton, Victoria on Friday.
After losing its first game against the ACT, WA bounced back to record a thrilling one-goal win over New South Wales in their final regular game of the Championships, 8.5 (53) to 7.5 (47).
With the game hanging in the balance, Daniel McGinlay from the North Midlands Football League slotted a sensational goal from a tight angle to put WA in front before Brad Hardingham from South Bunbury threw the ball on his boot in heavy traffic to score his fourth goal of the game and put WA two goals up.
NSW forward Sean Harrap from Barooga pegged one back to match Hardingham with four majors and reduce the margin to six points but WA fought hard to retain the lead and hold on for victory, securing third place on the ACFC ladder behind Victoria and the ACT.
After a heavy loss to the ACT earlier in the day, the WA team came out firing to kick the first three goals and build a handy lead against a NSW side determined to notch up its first win of the carnival.
WA scored another three goals in the first half while NSW clawed their way back with four, narrowing the margin to 11 points heading into half time and setting the scene for an exciting finish.
Dale Baynes from the Great Northern Football League took a strong mark to start the second half but his kick was offline, adding a behind to WA’s total as they fought for control.
NSW, who were led through the midfield by Luke Carroll from Albury, then levelled the scores through Sean Harrap, who kicked consecutive goals after taking a couple of great marks on the lead, before McGinlay was thrown into the spotlight with his sensational goal from the pocket.
WA ruckman Ricky Mott played his best game of the carnival to give his followers first use on most occasions, while captain Simon Duckworth, Mick Sherry and Mark Gilholme were outstanding through the midfield.
Brad Hardingham led the way in the forward line, while Clint Ernst and Matt Kennewell were excellent in WA’s backline.

The ACT jumped out of the blocks to stun WA with seven unanswered goals in the first half, led by small forward Craig Healey from Tuggeranong.
WA’s Dale Baynes from Towns Football Club in Geraldton registered the first score of the game when he snapped a point from the pocket but it was all ACT after that, with Healey scoring his side’s first three goals with two clever snaps and another on the run.
Trailing by 44 points at half-time, WA made a much better start to the second half, winning the clearance and setting up a goal for Ricky Mott from Kukerin-Dumbleyung after strong marks to Baynes and South Bunbury player Brad Hardingham.
WA tried desperately to bridge the gap further but couldn’t match the pace of the ACT, who streamed forward in numbers and ran the ball into space, leaving their opponents in their wake.
WA managed to score two more goals through Daniel McGinlay from Coorow-Latham and Nathan Elari of Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault, while the ACT added another four goals in the second half to run out winners. Healey capped off the win with his fourth goal just before the final siren.
Baynes was strong in the forward line for WA but despite taking some great marks, only scored three behinds after hitting the post, missing a snap and tugging a long shot wide.
He was still one of his side’s best along with Elari, defender Adam Pearce from Boddington and captain Simon Duckworth.
