Winning art for Karlkurla Park gates

26/11/2008 3:56:00 PM
TWO boys from O'Conner and North Kalgoorlie primary schools will have their winning art works incoporated into the design of new gates at Karlkurla Bushland Park

Tremayne Collard, 7, from O’Connor and Mathew Alsop, 8, from North Kalgoorlie presented with $100 sports vouchers at school assemblies last week after their drawings depicting what Karlkurla Bushland Park means to them were selected as winners of a joint LandCorp and Kalgoorlie Boulder Urban LandCare Group (KBULG) competition.

O'Connor also received $250 as the school with most entries – 148 from eight classes.

A total of 459 entries from students aged 6-10, at Kalgoorlie, North Kalgoorlie, St Mary’s, Boulder and O’Connor primary school and Goldfields Baptist College.

LandCorp regional manager Paul Ferrante said it was no easy task to select the winners.

“We asked the kids to draw a picture of what Karlkurla Park meant to them. The interpretations were so varied – some came up with the native bushland, some with a sunset on the horizon, while many focused on the wildlife and birds,” he said.

David Gleeson, KBULG co-ordinator said he was relieved not to have been asked to judge the competition.

“All entries gave so much thought to what they chose to draw and how they coloured in - the quality was extremely high and it was fantastic to see how the students have gained an understanding of environmental issues effecting our local environment,” he said.

The winning designs by Mathew and Tremayne will be installed on the two gates leading to the bushland park in the next few months.
