SEXUAL assault is a serious crime that impacts about one in five Australian women throughout their lifetime.
Last week, locals from the Eastern Goldfields Sexual Assault Resource Centre were out in force as part of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women - also known as White Ribbon Day.
The group constructed an information stall in St Barbara's Square and encouraged passers-by to wear a white ribbon - representing a personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.
An annual event, White Ribbon Day aims to raise public awareness of crimes, including domestic violence, sexual assault and people trafficking, against women.
Harmful attitudes and beliefs in the community have been attributed as major contributing factors, while the day also focuses on the role of men and boys in helping reduce violence in the lives of women.
Locals who fall victim to domestic violence or sexual assault can contact a qualified crisis worker from SARC's 24-hour counselling hotline on 1800 688 922.
The hotline, run by volunteers, was established more than a decade ago.
SARC chairwoman Esther Roadnight said the hotline was an essential service for local victims of violence.
"Some people do not feel comfortable going directly to the police," Mrs Roadnight said.
"Therefore, this counselling service is vital in ensuring people do come forward.
"The worst thing someone can do is not report it (violence)."
