Science comes to classrooms

CLIMATE change, solar power and making bio-fuel from canola were just some of the subjects years 8-10 students across the Goldfields considered when Scitech’s Beyond the Beaker careers program came through last week.

It was the first time the program had visited the Goldfields and it educated and entertained about 750 children at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School, John Paul College and Southern Cross, Kambalda, and Norseman District High Schools.

Project officer and science presenter, Kate Moore, said: “This is all very hands on and students discussed climate change and its impact. We also went through photosynthesis and the effects of deforestation.

“They (students) calculated environmental and economic costs of household appliances and light globes to see where they can make a change.”

The program aims to inspire students to pursue careers in science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
