Ride of a lifetime

2/04/2008 8:28:11 PM
A CONTINGENT of more than 40 enthusiastic cyclists from the Busselton-Dunsborough area almost stopped the traffic in Hannan Street a few times this week.

On Tuesday the members of the Geographe Cycle Club set off for the most ambitious outing in the group’s ten-year history.

They planned to ride the arduous 812km back home over the next two weeks.

“We thought that would be a suitable challenge,” said Norm Watts with a wry smile.

But he conceded that help from the easterly winds would be appreciated.

An average daily leg on the journey would be around 67km.

That figure could well be the mean age of the team.

“It’s got to be close to 70,” Mr Watts grinned.

He named club chairman Peter Whiteside as “the instigator” because the adventure was his idea originally.

While some of the senior citizens in their home town are using the outing as a vehicle for fundraising, the Geographe cyclists are making the trip for the fun of it.

An honorary doctor, physiotherapist and bike mechanics are travelling with them.

They hoped they would be going along purely for the ride.
