ORGANISERS of festivals and sporting events in the first half of 2009 can now apply for funding from the Regional Events Scheme administered by Eventscorp.

Second tier events can apply for up to $20,000 in funding while first tier events that have the potential to become iconic events for regional WA can receive up to $50,000.

Eventscorp executive director David van Ooran said each application would be assessed on its ability to attract visitors , generate media attention and raise the profile of an area.

Applications for funding close at 5pm on August 15 and are available at http://regionalevents.westernaustralia.com

Discover the Round from September 7-13 this year is one of the events that has received funding.

The popular event is a week-long festival supporting the annual horse racing and pacing round in Kalgoorlie.

This iconic event is expected to attract thousands of visitors and generate strong media coverage through activities such as a ball, rodeo, World Two-up Championships, a concert and a market day.
