THE first woman Anglican Bishop in Australia, Kay Goldsworthy, made plenty of friends during a visit to Kalgoorlie at the weekend for centenary celebrations.
Bishop Goldsworthy was here to help the Eastern Goldfields Anglican Parish celebrate the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone at St John's Old Cathedral in Maritana Street on November 25, 1908.
Bishop Goldsworthy received a warm welcome from the Anglican community at a dinner in her honour on Saturday night at St John's church hall.
She said: “I am delighted to be here, this is my first visit to Kalgoorlie in this capacity.”
Despite her duties, she took the time to visit the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Super Pit and anticipated that her son, who is studying mining at Curtin University in Perth, will probably move to Kalgoorlie at some point.
“Kalgoorlie is such a thriving and busy town and constantly growing and expanding,” she said.
Conducting Sunday services Bishop Goldsworthy baptised three people, confirmed one person and received a person into the church.
Venerable Peter Stanley of the Anglican sector of the Eastern Gold fields Parish, said: “She was so glad to be in Kalgoorlie and to see how we operate.
“We took her out to the Broad Arrow on Sunday after the service and had their famous burgers which she absolutely loved.”
